February 23, 2009 One Month Away! Who Else is Excited?
10:08am by Cheechoo (Cars)
I can’t contain my excitement! I saw this little video today on Youtube, with the young gun Sebastian Vettel narrating the new FIA rules for the ‘09 F1 season. Pretty neat little video if you ask me, even if you aren’t that into F1. KERS seems immensely cool – almost like the “turbo” or “nitrous” buttons in those old school video games.
Even with Honda out, I’m still excited to see the new changes in the cars, and to see the young kids Vettel and Nakajima in action! And OF COURSE BRUNO SENNA, if he gets a shot…
Sorry to those who aren’t interested in F1, but if you call yourself an auto enthusiast, go turn on the tele or read up some F1 news!
BTW, what’s with all the Sebastien/Sebastians in Formula 1 these days? There’s three of them now!

They are paypal only for $3. Sort of a special edition. Following the San Fran lot, I believe the spaces will go back to the alphabet.
San Fransisco is the vDream base of operations (where the developers live)

1 Light 2 Light 3 Light 4 Light 5 Light and we are ….... GO GO GO GO GO !! I can’t wait for the new Season to kick off down under !! Forza Ferrari !! anyway that ends the excited bit.
OK time for some information, The old Honda team and Jeson Button are in talks with the CEO of Virgin Group Sir Richard Branson, He wants to keep the same team at Honda tho Rubens is gone, Honda may also be racing for the first 4 races of the year if the Virgin Group deal goes thought. Honda left F1 due to money worries and didn’t want to spend millions building a new car for the 2009 season in the global credit cruch.
Hopefully the Virgin deal does go thought or Berine will have alot to answer for as he promised to put 22 cars on the grid at each race.
The new KERS system that stands for The Kinetic Energy Recovery System, comes in two formats,
The battery system seems set to be the more popular method. It harnesses the braking energy by storing it in super-capacitor batteries which then release power to the driven wheels when required.
The flywheel method looks set to be used by Williams (and possibly Honda and/or Toyota). Here the braking energy is used to turn a flywheel and when extra power is needed the wheels are coupled up to the spinning flywheel to give a boost in power.
Initially, the regulations limit the power of the KERS systems to 60kw (around 80 horsepower) and the storage capacity of the energy is 400kJ (kilojoules) per lap. What in effect this means is an extra 80 horsepower available for 6.7s per lap.
The idea is not only to force F1 to develop green technology but also to help overtaking. A chasing driver could deploy his KERS device as he is catching the car ahead to give him an acceleration boost.
Of course the driver being chased can use his KERS device defensively at the same time, thus negating the chasing driver’s power advantage.
But the limited storage of extra energy means that drivers will have to be very tactical in how they deploy the device.
Because it takes time to restore the energy after you’ve used it, it could be that you have used up your supply and the guy behind still has some left as you arrive at the critical point of the track.
In principle it brings an interesting new dimension to F1. But there are a lot of difficulties to overcome first – and it is by no means certain that teams will have their devices ready in time for the beginning of next season.
The use of KERS will not be compulsory, and so several teams are expecting to at least start 2009 without it, tho that said its a very very smart system.
Im not the biggest fan tho of the new design of the Aero packs the cars have to run these day the front wing is huge compaired to the rear wing but at least we have racing slicks again =)
Roll on Melbourne – Australia !!!

Yeah they wanted to decrease the aerodynamics of the rear wings so that tailing wouldn’t be so difficult, meaning easier passing. KERS is definitely awesome and reminds me of a video game.

The new technical spec’s for the F1 2009 season are there to imporve overtaking in the sport as F1 cars don’t work well in “bad air” after its passed over the car in front and been used on the aero pack of the car in front, these rules should be cool tho alot of the drivers are saying that if anything its hard to overtake as when you pull out to make a move you lose all the downforce over the rear of the car making very easy to spin out. The New Rules are as Follows.
- Front wing width increased to 180 instead of 140 cm.
- Front wing height decreased to 7.5 instead of 15 cm.
- The middle section over a width of 40 cm has to be a standard part.
- The driver may adjust the front wing flaps from the cockpit twice a lap by an angle of a maximum 6 degrees.
- Rear wing width 75 instead of 100 cm
- Rear wing height 95 instead of 80 cm.
The diffusor then starts from the centre of the rear axle rather than from the front end of the rear wheels. It may raise to 17.5 instead of 12.5 cm. The bodywork has to be clean. That means no barge boards, no winglets, no chimneys, no flipups.
Windtunnel research has shown that with the new rules the overall downforce loss will be 50 percent compared to the 2006 aero. If you follow another car within half a car length you will only lose 25 instead of 46 percent of the downforce and the balance shift will be 1 percent to the front rather than 4 percent to the back as it is now…sounds good, The Engines are 2.4ltr V8 that produce 750-800Bhp and are LIMITED to 19,000 Rpm shame we’re never see the return of the 1000bhp 3.0ltr 25,000 RPM V10’s tho =(

So the next parking structure is PayPal only? You gonna start making everything cost real money? So far I haven’t been sucked into the idea of actually paying for a game.

February 24, 2009
@James – The next parking structure will be only paypal, but I’m sure future garage’s will be available to purchase through vdream money. And of course you don’t NEED another parking spot in order to play. The last parking spots didn’t sell nearly as quick as we had though they would as well.

February 24, 2009
What Josh said is true. The San Fransisco is a special edition (ie. unique) garage space that you can purchase if you decide. The round of garages after that will not be exclusive to paypal. It is a way for people who want to contribute financially to the success of vDream (going towards servers and other ongoing maintenance) and to express their support for the application.

I’d love to have one of these bad boys on vDream. Not sure how it would be fair to even be racing the S7 against one of them though! Their skidpad ratings are like 4 G’s, their braking is ridiculous, and acceleration is nuts. F1 would beat everything by a crazy margin.
