• Today The Zerg are invading! North Carolina sewers?

    05:30am by Cheechoo (Random)

So they drained a sewer in North Carolina to inspect it with a little robot. They found these disgusting creatures in them.

Best quote I’ve seen so far: “Dude. They need to cut that open and get Sarah Kerrigan out of there before she becomes the Zerg Queen and kills us all.”

Totally looks like the zerg eggs. I just want to see an Ultralisk bust outta there.

Supposedly they are either a colony of Tubifex worms huddled together, or it’s a bryozoa colony (similar to corals). I say to hell with that, it’s Sarah Kerrigan in a Zerg chrysalis.

Where’s Zeratul when you need him?

It’s been a long and winding road, but today vDream officially reached a huge milestone: 50,000 monthly active users on Facebook! We have been experiencing great growth over the past month or so, growing for just over 12,500 MAU to now over 50,000, and the sky’s the limit!

  • June 17, 2009 vDream Finds A New Home

    05:24pm by Lijen (Site)

Due to our recent growth, vDream Racing officially has a new home! Late last night we migrated to a new hosting company called Voxel. We believe that this move will help us scale in the next few months. Since last night our new servers have been performing beautifully. The transition has been great, so I thought I would do a quick blog post to plug our new home. It’s about to get a little nerdy, so if you’re not interested in techy stuff, stop reading here. Here are the main reason’s why we switched:

    1. Included sys admin support – I’m a programmer, not a sysadmin, and that has always been a bottleneck for us. Voxel provides us with 24 sys admin support, so if its 3AM and I need something installed its no problem
    2. Dedicated boxes – We’ve moved off of 3 shared Joyent accelerators to 2 dedicated, beef balls at Voxel. The main bottleneck of our app has historically been memory, so were getting a decent overall RAM upgrade in this new setup
    3. CDN (Content Distribution Network) – vDream is a very image heavy site. One of our main complaints recently is that our images load too slowly. Voxel has a very nicely CDN that will allow us vastly improve image load times drastically.
    4. Price – We got all of this at a comparable price to our previous hosting company.

I thought this was a cool little stunt. Maybe we’ll make this a new vDream race type one day!

  • June 09, 2009 Congratulations to Roger Federer

    09:55am by Cheechoo (Random)

As many of you already know, we at vDream are sports fans. Any professional sport we enjoy watching, and we especially enjoy watching history in the making.

Congrats are in order for Tennis legend Roger Federer, who recently won his first French Open. Plagued by the clay court and by the “Nadal, Murray, Djokovic triumverate”, he luckily didn’t have to face any of them in Paris this year and was able to nab his career Grand Slam, matching both Andre Agassi’s career Grand Slam, and Pete Sampras’ total number of Masters wins. Hats off my Swiss friend, if you weren’t already a legend, you certainly are one now.

Time to dust off the old 25-year old McEnroe racquet and hit the hard court! 6-mph blazing serves are my specialty.

  • June 03, 2009 Forza 3 on the Horizon: Gran Turismo Checkmated?

    02:25am by Cheechoo (Opinion)

Ever Since Forza came out, there has been great debating on Forza vs. Gran Turismo. Users (read: fanboys) of each series have vehemently argued back and forth about which of the two was better. This debate is almost as big as the PS3 vs. XBOX 360 debate.

I was part of the camp that scoffed at the debaters, saying “forza 2 came out in 2007 for the xbox 360 console, while gt4 came out in 2005 for the PS2 console. of course forza 2 will have much better graphics, it’s on a better machine. Wait for GT5 to come out, wait for GT5 to come out… THEN you can compare Forza 2 to Gran Turismo – GT5.”

Well, the boys over at Turn10 have announced the release of Forza THREE for October of this year. Watch the attached youtube video for a teaser. What about Polyphony Digital’s highly touted GT5? No one knows, but speculation says not until 2010. What does this mean? This means that Forza 2 and Forza 3 were both completed before GT5 gets completed. Is Polyphony even trying? I’m a die-hard Sony fan, but this makes me think the Forza franchise wins.

  • June 02, 2009 Slight Hick-up Yesterday

    08:16pm by Lijen (Site)

As you all probably noticed, we were having some server issues yesterday. I wanna give a big THANK YOU to our hosting company, Joyent, for being on call to help us deal with the issue and minimize our downtime. We have been growing quickly lately and will likely be scaling our servers very soon. Let us know if you continue to experience slow page loads!

  • June 02, 2009 amazing...

    07:53am by Tony (Cars)

I first heard of Ken Block sometime last year when I saw his first trailer. This guy is amazing. Just watch (vid below)!

When it comes to driving deity Ken Block, words fail. So we’ll keep this brief. Make the jump for the full video of Gymkhana Two, the sequel to Block’s highly successful Gymkhana Practice flick from last year. We don’t want to spoil the surprises, but the new car control epic is rife with original stunts, mythical feats and more sideways, tire-smoking action than ever before. We’ve also posted two more videos after the break, including footage from the premiere party we attended last week and a short audio clip that puts you next to Block as he does a few donuts in his Crawford-prepped STI around the sound man. It’s stellar stuff and it’s all available below the fold.

  • May 28, 2009 vDream Sales!

    10:33pm by Lijen (Site)

With the real-world auto industry in shambles, we thought we would reflect the reality a little bit and try something new. From time to time certain cars and parts will go on sale! Products that are on sale will display a red tag in the store. Also, we’ve made it easier to stay up to date with new content releases by tagging new and collectible items in the store with a special icon.

So how can you stay up to date on sale items, newly released items, and collectible items? Here’s how to stay up to date:

    Facebook Users
Check your Facebook Notifications that appear on the bottom right of Facebook. We will send out an exclusive notification to all owners of the car that is on sale or that has new parts released. If you are not receiving vDream notifications, you can turn them on in your Facebook App Settings page. You can also follow us on Twitter, as described below.

    MySpace and Bebo Users
Follow us on Twitter! We will announce all sales and vDream car & part releases on Twitter. Click here to follow us.

So with no further ado, heres our first sale! As we all know, Pontiac has seen some rough times lately, which is why all Solstice parts are now 20% off in the Parts Shop! Go check it out!

Keep your eyes peeled in the future for great sales on cars and parts that may only last for hours.

On another note, we are re-purposing the blog to focus on strictly business, tech, and car related blog posts. If you want to hear more about the inside workings of vDream and our experiences in running the app, check the blog regularly. All site feature updates and content releases will strictly be limited to in-game announcements and the vForum, they will no longer appear in the blog…

    Happy vDreaming!
